What Is Garage Door Insulation?

Garage door insulation is a panel system fitted to the inside of a garage door to help reduce heat transfer through one of the largest moving surfaces in a home.

ThermaDoor is Australia’s original and only purpose-made garage door insulation system, designed specifically for the movement, sections and operating conditions of sectional and tilt garage doors.

ThermaDoor garage door insulation panels fit new and existing garage doors and move with the door as it opens and closes. Purpose-made spacers maintain an internal air cavity behind each panel, supporting year-round garage comfort.

Since 2012, ThermaDoor has been Australia’s garage door insulation pioneer. Developed by a registered builder with more than 45 years of construction experience, ThermaDoor introduced the first garage door insulation system to the Australian market—creating a category that did not previously exist.

Garage Door Insulation in Melbourne & Victoria: Why It Matters

Garage door insulation is one of the most effective upgrades a Melbourne or Victorian homeowner can make. Melbourne’s changeable climate brings hot summer afternoons, cool winters and significant temperature swings, which can make a steel garage door a major source of heat gain and heat loss. Garage door insulation helps create a more stable and usable space, supporting comfort in the garage and adjoining rooms throughout the year. ThermaDoor provides a purpose-made thermal barrier for new and existing sectional and tilt garage doors across Melbourne and Victoria.

What Makes ThermaDoor Garage Door Insulation Different?

High-Density EPS Core

Flame retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door — keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter, year after year. As the primary insulator in the composite system, it works in tandem with the foil and air cavity to deliver the verified assembly R-value.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Laminated to the back of every panel, this construction-grade foil reflects radiant heat back across the internal air cavity — the gap maintained by ThermaDoor's purpose-made foam packers. The foil only works because the gap is engineered. Together they form the reflective half of ThermaDoor's composite technology. The foil also acts as a Class 2 vapour barrier and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification — it's the same foil used to wrap Australian homes.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

The composite system only performs if the materials stay intact. This durable, flame retardant, UV-resistant vinyl facing protects the EPS core and lamination bond from Australia's harsh climate — resisting fading, cracking, and weathering year after year. The result is a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

A Real Melbourne Home. A Real Result.

When Melbourne builder John Guida from Stronghold Construction installed ThermaDoor on his own garage, he did not just take our word for it. He tested the results using a professional FLIR MR277 thermal imaging camera — the same equipment building inspectors use to identify heat loss, moisture risk and insulation failure.

The data he sent back is some of the most compelling real-world proof we have seen.

SURFACE TEMP REDUCTION

The Summer Heat Problem — Measured

John’s uninsulated metal garage door panels were radiating heat at a blistering 47.6°C. That is not a heatwave reading. That is what an ordinary Melbourne garage door does on a cool day when the sun has been on it. On a 40°C Melbourne summer day, the same door would be significantly worse.

John photographed the door mid-installation with one ThermaDoor panel already in place. He then pointed his FLIR camera at the door — and the difference was immediate and undeniable with the insulated panels measuring 17.4°C.

That’s a 30.0°C reduction in surface temperature.

Full installation complete — consistent 17.4°C surface temperature across the entire door. A 30°C reduction from bare metal.

Winter Condensation — Eliminated

The FLIR data also explains why John had been dealing with a problem that is very common in Melbourne: garage door condensation on cold winter nights. When an uninsulated metal door drops below the dew point of the air inside the garage, moisture condenses on the surface — a dripping door, a damp garage, and potential damage to everything stored inside.

By installing ThermaDoor, John created a thermal barrier that keeps the interior surface of the door close to the ambient room temperature, preventing it from dropping below the dew point. The FLIR data confirms it: the dew point reading dropped significantly with ThermaDoor installed, removing the conditions that cause condensation to form. The Sisalation foil backing bonded to every panel plays a key role in this — reflecting radiant heat and acting as a Class 2 vapour barrier, it is the same construction-grade foil used to wrap Australian homes.

“Well done regarding product and method — the spacer between works a treat. That’s a 30 degree temperature difference. I have no condensation on the panel door anymore after those freezing Melbourne nights. Thank you once again, it very much solved my issue and made it look better. Will use it again”.

Built for Melbourne & Victoria's Climate

Summer Heat & Northerly Winds

Melbourne's summers are unpredictable but the heat is real. Northerly winds push garage temperatures well past 50°C in an uninsulated space, and west-facing doors cop it hardest. ThermaDoor's EPS core and reflective foil backing work together to block radiant heat and keep the garage usable, whether your door faces north, west, or straight into the afternoon sun.

Four Seasons in One Day

Victoria's weather swings are hard on uninsulated spaces. Summer heat, autumn rain, cold snaps and everything in between puts pressure on your garage environment year-round. ThermaDoor's laminated vinyl finish is water resistant and impact resistant, unlike open-cell foam, polyester batts, or fibreglass insulation that absorb moisture and deteriorate over time. Built to handle whatever Victoria throws at it.

Cold Winter Mornings

Melbourne winters are genuinely cold, with overnight temperatures regularly dropping to single digits. ThermaDoor slows heat loss overnight, so stepping into your garage on a winter morning is not the shock to the system it used to be — and your stored gear, tools, and vehicles stay protected from the cold year-round.

Home Energy Rating Support

ThermaDoor gives builders, homeowners and energy assessors verified garage-door assembly R-values, backed by an independent engineering report, to review when the garage affects comfort, heat transfer or adjoining living areas — whether for a new build, renovation or existing home. Ask any supplier for their engineering report.

Make Your Melbourne & Victoria Garage More Usable All Year Round

What Changes When You Insulate Your Garage Door

With a stable, comfortable temperature year-round, Melbourne and Victoria homeowners are reclaiming their garages as usable living spaces.

Here is how ThermaDoor changes what you can do with your garage.

Home Gyms

Train comfortably year-round — no more sweltering summers or chilly winters.

Home Offices

Quieter, more stable temperatures for better focus and lower energy bills.

Man Caves

A retreat that stays cool in summer and warm in winter for real downtime.

Hobby Studios

Consistent conditions that protect materials and make projects more enjoyable.

Playrooms

A safer, more comfortable space for children’s play – fewer drafts and hot/cold spots.

Pet Rooms

A calmer climate for pets, reducing heat stress in summer and chills in winter.

Garage Door Insulation and Home Energy Rating

ThermaDoor is Australia’s only purpose-built garage door insulation with a verified complete installed assembly R-value — giving builders, homeowners and energy assessors independently verified data backed by an engineering report.

ThermaDoor does not guarantee a NatHERS or Home Energy Rating result. Rating outcomes depend on the whole home, including design, orientation, glazing, insulation, ventilation, air leakage, garage connection and assessment method.

Our article on thermal bridging and garage doors explains why tested assembly values matter.

What Melbourne Customers are Saying About ThermaDoor

Matthew converted his garage into a home gym and spent time researching every insulation option on the market before choosing ThermaDoor. Melbourne’s summer northerlies push uninsulated garage temperatures well past 50°C — a home gym becomes unusable without proper insulation. ThermaDoor’s three-layer panel system delivers independently tested R-values that alternatives simply cannot match.

“I took the time to do my research and was able to find ThermaDoor. I can honestly say it was the only product on the market that I felt was actually going to perform to the highest possible standard. It felt like a consultation based on data and not a sales pitch — but it was very interesting to hear about some of the traps of other products who actually will have a significantly inferior performance.”

I originally planned to do a DIY installation using the insulation kit, but I'm really glad I decided to have it professionally installed. The installation looks fantastic and was well worth the price. The installer was quick, professional and took the time to make sure the garage door spring was properly balanced after the insulation was fitted. Very happy with the result and would definitely recommend them.

I cannot speak highly enough of ThermaDoor and the product they have created. It is quite simply second to none. We had ThermaDoor installed on our new 16 panel, fully west facing garage door, and the result has exceeded anything I could have hoped for. The temperature in the space has now dropped by at least 20 degrees, which has completely transformed how we can use it. Our garage is not just a garage , it’s “the Cave” for my son, who is an NDIS participant, and his support team. We had already invested in an epoxy floor and replastering the space, but despite that, the heat made it almost unusable. Since installing ThermaDoor, it has become a comfortable, functional, and genuinely enjoyable environment. It has opened up a whole new level of independence and capacity building for my son and his team. The product itself looks premium, fits beautifully, and has made the space noticeably quieter as well , something I didn’t expect but absolutely love. Another positive for me is that the core product Is aesthetically pleasing with a beautiful vinyl panelling covering that finishes the door to a higher standard, Another 5 ⭐️ stand out of a quality solution. And then there is the service. Peter and Karen were nothing short of exceptional — knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely invested in helping us achieve the best outcome for our son to make his space a home away from home! This has been one of the most impactful upgrades we’ve made to our home, and I know it will carry us just as beautifully through winter as it has through summer. I am so grateful, thank you for helping us create a space that truly supports my son’s world and capacity building Deb4Sammy Mountain Creek

Our garage was very hot and a suggestion from a friend meant that we contact Thermadoor. From the initial contact to the completion, the company was very professional. The product is very good and I would definitely get their team to install. Today Don arrived on time and got the job done very quickly. The addition of the door seals was a good decision as they remove any dust and breeze that used to come through the sides and top. The door closer mechanism was modified to close with the extra panels and it is much quieter. I would recommend this company for the great job at a very reasonable price.

Short review: Garage temps have dropped 4c to 6c since installation and so glad we installed the ThermaDoor panels. Long review: We built a new house in 2023/2024 and the garage door gets full western sun every afternoon plus we also have side glass doors on the garage for side access so it also gets lots of sun and heat. I made sure to take note of our garage temps before installation and noticed immediately after installation the temp dropped 4c to 6c in summer and in winter its not as cold and I also noticed the noise is less, so straight away money well spent. The garage just feels more comfortable on very hot days and you really notice the difference when you open the garage door and walk out into the front yard. The install guys were really nice and local for us (Sydney) and after panel installation they also serviced our garage door to make sure everything was OK and I appreciated their extra care and clean up afterwards. Installation didnt take long and the garage door looks great, you wouldnt know it was there unless I pointed it out to you. Well worth the investment in insulating our garage door and Ive recommended them quite a few times since. Edit. We installed the Premium panels

Frequently Asked Questions - Garage Door Insulation Melbourne & Victoria

Does garage door insulation work in Melbourne's climate?

Yes — and Melbourne’s climate is one of the strongest arguments for it. Summer northerlies push uninsulated garage temperatures past 50°C, while winter overnight lows regularly drop to single digits. ThermaDoor’s EPS core and reflective foil backing work in both directions, blocking radiant heat in summer and slowing heat loss in winter. The result is a garage that stays 10 to 15 degrees closer to ambient temperature year-round, which makes a measurable difference to both comfort and energy bills in a home with an attached garage.

Yes. ThermaDoor has a network of authorised distributors across Melbourne and regional Victoria who can supply and install the system professionally.

Yes. ThermaDoor’s laminated vinyl finish is water resistant and impact resistant, which means it handles rain, humidity and temperature swings without absorbing moisture or deteriorating. Unlike fibreglass batts or open-cell foam products that can sag or absorb moisture over time, ThermaDoor panels are purpose-built to maintain performance through the full range of Victorian weather conditions.

Yes — ThermaDoor DIY kits ship to any Victorian postcode, including Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton, Wodonga, Warrnambool, Mildura, the Mornington Peninsula, Latrobe Valley and all regional areas. Orders are dispatched from our Queensland factory and delivered via standard freight. Most Victorian deliveries arrive within 3 to 5 business days.

ThermaDoor is designed specifically for sectional panel doors and tilt doors, which are the most common garage door types in Victorian homes. It is not suitable for roller doors. If you are unsure whether your door is compatible, check our door compatibility guide or contact us before ordering — we would rather help you confirm fit than have you order the wrong product.

The simplest way to insulate your Melbourne garage is with a ThermaDoor DIY kit, delivered directly to your door. Each kit comes with purpose-built EPS panels sized for your door, a reflective foil backing, and everything you need to complete the job yourself in a few hours — no trades, no adhesives, no special tools. If you prefer to have it done for you, contact us and we will connect you with an authorised ThermaDoor distributor in your area.

Yes. Since May 2024, all new homes and major renovations in Victoria must achieve a 7-star NatHERS energy rating. An uninsulated garage door is a thermal bridge that leaks heat in winter and absorbs it in summer, dragging down your home’s overall efficiency. By installing ThermaDoor, you add a verified assembly R-value of R1.43 (winter) to the largest opening in your home, significantly improving its thermal envelope and helping you align with the new 7-star standards.
