Complete ThermaDoor Panel System

What Is Garage Door Insulation?

Garage door insulation is a panel system fitted to the inside of a garage door to help reduce heat transfer through one of the largest moving surfaces in a home.

ThermaDoor is Australia’s original and only purpose-made garage door insulation system, designed specifically for the movement, sections and operating conditions of sectional and tilt garage doors.

ThermaDoor garage door insulation panels fit new and existing garage doors and move with the door as it opens and closes. Purpose-made spacers maintain an internal air cavity behind each panel, supporting year-round garage comfort.

Since 2012, ThermaDoor has been Australia’s garage door insulation pioneer. Developed by a registered builder with more than 45 years of construction experience, ThermaDoor introduced the first garage door insulation system to the Australian market—creating a category that did not previously exist.

Garage Door Insulation in Perth & WA: Why It Matters

Garage door insulation is one of the most effective upgrades a Perth homeowner can make. With temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C in summer and the afternoon sun driving heat directly through steel garage doors, an uninsulated garage quickly becomes unusable. Whether your garage faces north across the northern suburbs or catches the full force of the Fremantle Doctor on the coastal strip, the impact on comfort — and on the rooms adjoining your garage — is significant. ThermaDoor provides a purpose-made thermal barrier to new and existing sectional and tilt garage doors, supporting a more stable, comfortable and usable garage year-round.

What Makes ThermaDoor Garage Door Insulation Different?

High-Density EPS Core

35mm EPS core provides the primary thermal resistance in the ThermaDoor composite panel.

Flame-retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door, keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter. As the primary insulator in the composite system, it works with the laminated Sisalation foil backing and engineered air cavity to deliver the verified installed-assembly R-value.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Laminated Sisalation foil reflects radiant heat across ThermaDoor’s engineered internal air cavity.

Laminated to the rear of each panel, construction-grade Sisalation foil forms the reflective layer in the ThermaDoor composite system. Its low-emissivity surface works across the engineered internal air cavity, maintained by purpose-made foam packers. The foil also functions as a Class 2 vapour barrier and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification — it’s the same foil used to wrap Australian homes.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

UV-stable laminated vinyl facing helps protect the EPS core and lamination bond, maintaining a clean, durable interior finish.

The composite system only performs if the materials stay intact. This durable, flame retardant, vinyl facing protects the EPS core and lamination bond from Australia’s harsh climate, resisting fading, cracking and weathering year after year. The result is a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

MELBOURNE BUILDER CASE STUDY

A Real Result. Measured by a Builder

When Melbourne builder John Guida from Stronghold Construction installed ThermaDoor on his own garage, he did not just take our word for it. He tested the results using a professional FLIR MR277 thermal imaging camera — the same equipment building inspectors use to identify heat loss, moisture risk and insulation failure.

The data he captured is some of the most compelling real-world proof we have seen.

UNINSULATED PANEL SURFACE TEMPERATURE

17.4°C

THERMADOOR PANEL SURFACE TEMPERATURE

SURFACE TEMP REDUCTION

The Summer Heat Problem — Measured

John’s uninsulated metal garage door panels were radiating heat at a blistering 47.6°C. That is not a heatwave reading. That is what an ordinary metal garage door does when the sun has been on it. On a 40°C Australian summer day, the same door would be significantly worse.

John photographed the door mid-installation with one ThermaDoor panel already in place. He then pointed his FLIR camera at the door — and the difference was immediate and undeniable, with the insulated panels measuring 17.4°C.

That is a 30.0°C reduction in surface temperature.

Full installation complete — consistent 17.4°C surface temperature across the entire door. A 30°C reduction from bare metal.

Winter Condensation — Eliminated

The FLIR data also explains why John had been dealing with a problem that is common across Australia: garage door condensation on cold winter nights. When an uninsulated metal door drops below the dew point of the air inside the garage, moisture condenses on the surface — a dripping door, a damp garage, and potential damage to everything stored inside.

By installing ThermaDoor, John created a thermal barrier that keeps the interior surface of the door close to the ambient room temperature, preventing it from dropping below the dew point. The FLIR data confirms it: the dew point reading dropped significantly with ThermaDoor installed, removing the conditions that cause condensation to form. The Sisalation foil backing bonded to every panel plays a key role in this — reflecting radiant heat and acting as a Class 2 vapour barrier, it is the same construction-grade foil used to wrap Australian homes.
“Well done regarding product and method — the spacer between works a treat. That’s a 30 degree temperature difference! I have no condensation on the panel door anymore after those freezing Melbourne nights. Thank you once again, it very much solved my issue and made it look better. Will use it again”.

Built for Perth & Western Australia's Climate

Intense Summer Heat

Perth’s long, dry summers can turn a sun-exposed steel garage door into a major source of garage heat.

Perth homes can face extended periods of intense sun, hot easterly winds and temperatures above 35°C. When a garage door is exposed to direct afternoon sun, the steel surface can radiate heat into the space for hours—making an uninsulated garage hot and uncomfortable.

Thermadoor’s reflective foil backing helps reduce radiant heat transfer, while its EPS insulation core helps slow conducted heat through the door. Together, they help keep the garage more comfortable and usable through Perth’s harsh summer conditions.

Coastal Conditions & the 'Freo Doctor'

Perth’s hot, still mornings and salt-laden afternoon sea breezes can put coastal garage doors to the test.

Across Perth’s coastal suburbs, garage doors can sit in direct summer sun for hours before the Fremantle Doctor arrives in the afternoon. Sea air may also carry salt and moisture onto exposed surfaces—particularly in homes closer to the coast—adding another layer of environmental exposure over time.

Thermadoor’s laminated vinyl finish provides a durable, water-resistant and easy-to-wipe surface, helping homeowners keep their garage door insulation clean and protected in changing coastal conditions. Unlike absorbent insulation materials such as open-cell foam, fibreglass or polyester batts, Thermadoor’s laminated finish does not soak up moisture.

Chilly Winter Mornings

Perth’s cool, damp winter mornings can make an uninsulated garage feel noticeably colder.

While Perth is known for its sunshine, winter brings cool overnight temperatures, wet weather and crisp early mornings. An uninsulated steel garage door can allow warmth to escape and cold to transfer into the garage, leaving the space uncomfortable when the day begins.

Thermadoor’s insulated EPS core helps slow heat loss through the garage door and reduce cold transfer from outside. This supports a more stable garage environment through Perth’s winter mornings, helping keep the space more comfortable for stored belongings, vehicles and everyday use.

Home Energy Rating Support

Independently calculated assembly R-values for energy assessment review

ThermaDoor provides independently calculated garage door assembly R-values and supporting documentation for builders, homeowners and energy assessors to review within the full building design. Where a garage is attached to, below or beside living areas, its door may be relevant to comfort and heat transfer. NatHERS, BASIX, BESS and other rating outcomes depend on the complete building design and assessment method.

I originally planned to do a DIY installation using the insulation kit, but I'm really glad I decided to have it professionally installed. The installation looks fantastic and was well worth the price. The installer was quick, professional and took the time to make sure the garage door spring was properly balanced after the insulation was fitted. Very happy with the result and would definitely recommend them.

I cannot speak highly enough of ThermaDoor and the product they have created. It is quite simply second to none. We had ThermaDoor installed on our new 16 panel, fully west facing garage door, and the result has exceeded anything I could have hoped for. The temperature in the space has now dropped by at least 20 degrees, which has completely transformed how we can use it. Our garage is not just a garage , it’s “the Cave” for my son, who is an NDIS participant, and his support team. We had already invested in an epoxy floor and replastering the space, but despite that, the heat made it almost unusable. Since installing ThermaDoor, it has become a comfortable, functional, and genuinely enjoyable environment. It has opened up a whole new level of independence and capacity building for my son and his team. The product itself looks premium, fits beautifully, and has made the space noticeably quieter as well , something I didn’t expect but absolutely love. Another positive for me is that the core product Is aesthetically pleasing with a beautiful vinyl panelling covering that finishes the door to a higher standard, Another 5 ⭐️ stand out of a quality solution. And then there is the service. Peter and Karen were nothing short of exceptional — knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely invested in helping us achieve the best outcome for our son to make his space a home away from home! This has been one of the most impactful upgrades we’ve made to our home, and I know it will carry us just as beautifully through winter as it has through summer. I am so grateful, thank you for helping us create a space that truly supports my son’s world and capacity building Deb4Sammy Mountain Creek

Our garage was very hot and a suggestion from a friend meant that we contact Thermadoor. From the initial contact to the completion, the company was very professional. The product is very good and I would definitely get their team to install. Today Don arrived on time and got the job done very quickly. The addition of the door seals was a good decision as they remove any dust and breeze that used to come through the sides and top. The door closer mechanism was modified to close with the extra panels and it is much quieter. I would recommend this company for the great job at a very reasonable price.

Short review: Garage temps have dropped 4c to 6c since installation and so glad we installed the ThermaDoor panels. Long review: We built a new house in 2023/2024 and the garage door gets full western sun every afternoon plus we also have side glass doors on the garage for side access so it also gets lots of sun and heat. I made sure to take note of our garage temps before installation and noticed immediately after installation the temp dropped 4c to 6c in summer and in winter its not as cold and I also noticed the noise is less, so straight away money well spent. The garage just feels more comfortable on very hot days and you really notice the difference when you open the garage door and walk out into the front yard. The install guys were really nice and local for us (Sydney) and after panel installation they also serviced our garage door to make sure everything was OK and I appreciated their extra care and clean up afterwards. Installation didnt take long and the garage door looks great, you wouldnt know it was there unless I pointed it out to you. Well worth the investment in insulating our garage door and Ive recommended them quite a few times since. Edit. We installed the Premium panels

Use the calculator below to estimate the possible payback and long-term value of insulating a suitable Perth and Western Australian garage door with ThermaDoor.

These estimates apply to ThermaDoor only and cannot be assumed for other products used as garage door insulation.

Step 1: Where are you located?

Your climate affects how much thermal load your garage door creates and how much insulation can help.

Step 2: What size is your garage door?

Larger doors have more surface area, so insulation has a greater impact on thermal load.

Step 3: Tell us about your home

These factors determine how much the garage door's thermal performance affects your living spaces and energy use.
