Garage Door Insulation on the Sunshine Coast:
Why It Matters
Garage door insulation is one of the most effective upgrades a Sunshine Coast homeowner can make. The Sunshine Coast’s warm, humid summers, strong afternoon sun and coastal conditions can turn a steel garage door into a major source of heat, making the garage and adjoining rooms less comfortable. During cooler winter mornings, garage door insulation also helps create a more stable and usable space. ThermaDoor provides a purpose-made thermal barrier for new and existing sectional and tilt garage doors, supporting year-round comfort in Sunshine Coast homes.

What Makes ThermaDoor Garage Door Insulation Different?
High-Density EPS Core
35mm EPS core provides the primary thermal resistance in the ThermaDoor composite panel.
READ TECHNICAL DETAIL
Flame-retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door, keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter. As the primary insulator in the composite system, it works with the laminated Sisalation foil backing and engineered air cavity to deliver the verified installed-assembly R-value.
Sisalation Foil Backing
Laminated Sisalation foil reflects radiant heat across ThermaDoor’s engineered internal air cavity.
READ TECHNICAL DETAIL
Laminated to the rear of each panel, construction-grade Sisalation foil forms the reflective layer in the ThermaDoor composite system. Its low-emissivity surface works across the engineered internal air cavity, maintained by purpose-made foam packers. The foil also functions as a Class 2 vapour barrier and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification — it’s the same foil used to wrap Australian homes.
UV-Stable Vinyl Facing
UV-stable laminated vinyl facing helps protect the EPS core and lamination bond, maintaining a clean, durable interior finish.
READ TECHNICAL DETAIL
The composite system only performs if the materials stay intact. This durable, flame retardant, vinyl facing protects the EPS core and lamination bond from Australia’s harsh climate, resisting fading, cracking and weathering year after year. The result is a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

A Real Queensland Home. A Real Result.
On a sunny 28°C autumn afternoon in Mountain Creek, Queensland, Deborah’s west-facing garage door measured 44.7°C before ThermaDoor. With ThermaDoor installed, the same door measured 30.8°C — a 13.9°C cooler door surface.
For Deborah’s family, the difference transformed the garage into a more comfortable and usable space.
Learn how ThermaDoor’s insulated garage door panels work — and why the R-value difference matters.

Built for the Sunshine Coast's Climate
Summer Heat & Humidity
Sunshine Coast heat and humidity can turn a sun-exposed steel garage door into a major source of garage heat.
HOW THERMADOOR HELPS
During the Sunshine Coast’s hotter months, sun-exposed steel garage doors can absorb and transfer heat into the garage. ThermaDoor’s 35mm EPS core, laminated Sisalation foil backing and engineered internal air cavity work together to reduce conducted and radiant heat transfer through the door. This supports a more stable, comfortable garage and can help reduce heat transfer to adjoining living areas.
Storm Season Protection
Sunshine Coast storm-season weather calls for a durable, purpose-built garage door insulation system.
HOW THERMADOOR HELPS
Sunshine Coast storm seasons can bring heavy rain, wind-driven weather and rapidly changing conditions. ThermaDoor combines a UV-stable laminated vinyl facing, 35mm EPS core and laminated Sisalation foil backing in one complete composite system. The foil layer provides a Class 2 vapour barrier, while the laminated construction supports the system’s performance and clean finished appearance over time.
Cool Winter Mornings
ThermaDoor helps slow heat loss overnight, supporting a more comfortable garage on cool Sunshine Coast mornings.
HOW THERMADOOR HELPS
Although the Sunshine Coast is subtropical, cooler winter mornings are common, particularly through hinterland areas. ThermaDoor’s 35mm EPS core helps slow conducted heat transfer through the garage door, while the laminated Sisalation foil backing and engineered air cavity contribute to the complete assembly’s thermal performance. Together, the system supports a more stable, comfortable garage through cooler morning conditions.
Home Energy Rating Support
Independently calculated assembly R-values for energy assessment review
HOW THERMADOOR HELPS
ThermaDoor provides independently calculated garage door assembly R-values and supporting documentation for builders, homeowners and energy assessors to review within the full building design. Where a garage is attached to, below or beside living areas, its door may be relevant to comfort and heat transfer. NatHERS, BASIX, BESS and other rating outcomes depend on the complete building design and assessment method.

I originally planned to do a DIY installation using the insulation kit, but I'm really glad I decided to have it professionally installed. The installation looks fantastic and was well worth the price. The installer was quick, professional and took the time to make sure the garage door spring was properly balanced after the insulation was fitted. Very happy with the result and would definitely recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

We purchased a DIY kit for our garage door to cool it down before installing a solar battery. We are really impressed with the results and have noticed a significant difference in the temperature since adding the insulation. Very glad we did it!Posted on Google![]()

I cannot speak highly enough of ThermaDoor and the product they have created. It is quite simply second to none. We had ThermaDoor installed on our new 16 panel, fully west facing garage door, and the result has exceeded anything I could have hoped for. The temperature in the space has now dropped by at least 20 degrees, which has completely transformed how we can use it. Our garage is not just a garage , it’s “the Cave” for my son, who is an NDIS participant, and his support team. We had already invested in an epoxy floor and replastering the space, but despite that, the heat made it almost unusable. Since installing ThermaDoor, it has become a comfortable, functional, and genuinely enjoyable environment. It has opened up a whole new level of independence and capacity building for my son and his team. The product itself looks premium, fits beautifully, and has made the space noticeably quieter as well , something I didn’t expect but absolutely love. Another positive for me is that the core product Is aesthetically pleasing with a beautiful vinyl panelling covering that finishes the door to a higher standard, Another 5 ⭐️ stand out of a quality solution. And then there is the service. Peter and Karen were nothing short of exceptional — knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely invested in helping us achieve the best outcome for our son to make his space a home away from home! This has been one of the most impactful upgrades we’ve made to our home, and I know it will carry us just as beautifully through winter as it has through summer. I am so grateful, thank you for helping us create a space that truly supports my son’s world and capacity building Deb4Sammy Mountain CreekPosted on Google![]()

Our garage was very hot and a suggestion from a friend meant that we contact Thermadoor. From the initial contact to the completion, the company was very professional. The product is very good and I would definitely get their team to install. Today Don arrived on time and got the job done very quickly. The addition of the door seals was a good decision as they remove any dust and breeze that used to come through the sides and top. The door closer mechanism was modified to close with the extra panels and it is much quieter. I would recommend this company for the great job at a very reasonable price.Posted on Google![]()

Short review: Garage temps have dropped 4c to 6c since installation and so glad we installed the ThermaDoor panels. Long review: We built a new house in 2023/2024 and the garage door gets full western sun every afternoon plus we also have side glass doors on the garage for side access so it also gets lots of sun and heat. I made sure to take note of our garage temps before installation and noticed immediately after installation the temp dropped 4c to 6c in summer and in winter its not as cold and I also noticed the noise is less, so straight away money well spent. The garage just feels more comfortable on very hot days and you really notice the difference when you open the garage door and walk out into the front yard. The install guys were really nice and local for us (Sydney) and after panel installation they also serviced our garage door to make sure everything was OK and I appreciated their extra care and clean up afterwards. Installation didnt take long and the garage door looks great, you wouldnt know it was there unless I pointed it out to you. Well worth the investment in insulating our garage door and Ive recommended them quite a few times since. Edit. We installed the Premium panelsPosted on Google![]()

Karen and the crew were fantastic to deal with from start to finish. The product is amazing and has decreased the temperature in our garage by 10-15 degrees C and also decreased the temp in our house. It was super easy to self instal. I had my west facing garage door insulated and sealing brushes added to stop dust, some of the best money I have ever spent on a house improvement. Great service, efficient and reasonably priced. I would recommend in a flash.

We’re super impressed with our newly-installed Thermadoor insulation, it works a treat on our north-facing garage door and looks very sharp. Top marks for customer service and Caleb’s very neat and tidy job on the install. Highly recommend this outfit

Why is garage door insulation important on the Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast experiences high humidity, salty air, and hot summers that can turn garages into ovens. Insulating your garage door with ThermaDoor helps block radiant heat, reduces temperature fluctuations and helps keep adjoining rooms more comfortable – especially during Queensland’s sweltering days.
Can I DIY, or do I need a pro - and how long does it take?
A confident DIYer can finish a double sectional door in about 3 hours using ThermaDoor’s pre-cut kit. Prefer a pro job? Our authorised garage door pros supply, fit and spring balance in around 2 hours – depending on the job.
Will ThermaDoor insulation hold up in coastal conditions of the Sunshine Coast?
Yes. ThermaDoor is purpose built for Australian homes and performs exceptionally well in coastal climates. The durable vinyl laminated surface resists moisture and salt air and provides further protection to the construction grade EPS core – it won’t degrade or become waterlogged over time due to humid environments.
Is ThermaDoor made in Australia?
Yes — ThermaDoor is proudly Australian made garage door insulation. Our business is headquartered on the Sunshine Coast at Chevallum, Queensland, and every ThermaDoor panel is manufactured in Australia to our own registered design — protected under the Designs Act 2003 (Cth). ThermaDoor is the only purpose-made garage door insulation designed and produced in Australia — not a repurposed wall or ceiling product adapted for garage doors. When you buy ThermaDoor garage door insulation on the Sunshine Coast, you’re supporting a local business and getting a product built specifically for Australian conditions, Australian door sizes, and Australian building standards.
What garage door types does ThermaDoor fit — sectional and tilt?
Yes — ThermaDoor is designed to fit both sectional garage doors and tilt garage doors. Each panel is custom-cut to suit the specific dimensions of your door, whether it’s a single or double door, sectional panel or tilt slab. The mechanical fixing system — no glue, no adhesive tape — works with both door types and is designed to stay securely in place as the door operates over thousands of cycles. If you’re unsure which door type you have or how many panels you need, our team can help you measure up before you order. Use our online measurement guide or contact us directly for advice specific to your Sunshine Coast home.

BEFORE YOU BUY
Don't Buy Garage Door Insulation Until You Read This
Most garage door insulation is marketed using terminology borrowed from walls and ceilings — R-values from raw materials, fixing methods designed for static walls, and compliance claims with no documentation behind them. This free checklist gives you six clear questions to ask before you buy, so you can compare any product — including ours — on the factors that actually matter.
- Whether the supplier publishes an R-value at all — not providing one removes the consumer's right to compare products on equal terms
- Whether the R-value applies to a real installed garage door — not a raw material or wall insulation figure
- Whether the system accounts for both summer and winter performance, not just one direction
- Whether an air cavity is maintained so the insulation can actually do its job
- Whether the fixing method preserves door movement and does not compromise spring balance or safety
- Whether the supplier can provide compliance documentation if you are building, renovating, or need it for an energy assessment
