What Is Garage Door Insulation?

Garage door insulation is a panel system fitted to the inside of a garage door to help reduce heat transfer through one of the largest moving surfaces in a home.

ThermaDoor is Australia’s original and only purpose-made garage door insulation system, designed specifically for the movement, sections and operating conditions of sectional and tilt garage doors.

ThermaDoor garage door insulation panels fit new and existing garage doors and move with the door as it opens and closes. Purpose-made spacers maintain an internal air cavity behind each panel, supporting year-round garage comfort.

Since 2012, ThermaDoor has been Australia’s garage door insulation pioneer. Developed by a registered builder with more than 45 years of construction experience, ThermaDoor introduced the first garage door insulation system to the Australian market—creating a category that did not previously exist.

Garage Door Insulation on the Sunshine Coast: Why It Matters

Garage door insulation is one of the most effective upgrades a Sunshine Coast homeowner can make. The Sunshine Coast’s warm, humid summers, strong afternoon sun and coastal conditions can turn a steel garage door into a major source of heat, making the garage and adjoining rooms less comfortable. During cooler winter mornings, garage door insulation also helps create a more stable and usable space. ThermaDoor provides a purpose-made thermal barrier for new and existing sectional and tilt garage doors, supporting year-round comfort in Sunshine Coast homes.

DIY or Professional Garage Door Insulation on the Sunshine Coast

Whether you prefer to install it yourself or have our team of certified ThermaDoor technicians handle everything, ThermaDoor is available both ways — with the same product, the same quality, and the same result.

What Makes ThermaDoor Garage Door Insulation Different?

High-Density EPS Core

Flame retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door — keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter, year after year. As the primary insulator in the composite system, it works in tandem with the foil and air cavity to deliver the verified assembly R-value.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Laminated to the back of every panel, this construction-grade foil reflects radiant heat back across the internal air cavity — the gap maintained by ThermaDoor's purpose-made foam packers. The foil only works because the gap is engineered. Together they form the reflective half of ThermaDoor's composite technology. The foil also acts as a Class 2 vapour barrier and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification — it's the same foil used to wrap Australian homes.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

The composite system only performs if the materials stay intact. This durable, flame retardant, UV-resistant vinyl facing protects the EPS core and lamination bond from Australia's harsh climate — resisting fading, cracking, and weathering year after year. The result is a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

A Real Queensland Home. A Real Result.

On a sunny 28°C autumn afternoon in Mountain Creek, Queensland, Deborah’s west-facing garage door measured 44.7°C before ThermaDoor. With ThermaDoor installed, the same door measured 30.8°C — a 13.9°C cooler door surface.

For Deborah’s family, the difference transformed the garage into a more comfortable and usable space.

Learn how ThermaDoor’s insulated garage door panels work — and why the R-value difference matters.

“The temperature in the space has dropped by at least 20 degrees, which has completely transformed how we can use it. Since installing ThermaDoor, it has become a comfortable, functional, and genuinely enjoyable environment. It has opened up a whole new level of independence and capacity building for my son and his team. This has been one of the most impactful upgrades we’ve made to our home.”

Built for the Sunshine Coast's Climate

Summer Heat & Humidity

From October through April, an uninsulated Sunshine Coast garage can hit 50°C+ by midday. That heat doesn't stay in the garage — it pushes through shared walls into adjoining rooms and forces your air conditioning to work overtime.

Storm Season & Moisture

Sunshine Coast storm season brings heavy rain, wind-driven moisture, and rapid temperature swings. Open-cell foam and fibreglass insulation absorb that moisture and fail. ThermaDoor's laminated vinyl finish is water resistant and built for Queensland weather.

Cool Winter Mornings

Even in the subtropics, Hinterland nights and winter mornings can bite. An uninsulated door lets cold air settle through the floor into living areas. ThermaDoor slows heat loss overnight so stepping into your garage in the morning isn't a shock to the system.

Home Energy Rating Support

ThermaDoor gives builders, homeowners and energy assessors verified garage-door assembly R-values, backed by an independent engineering report, to review when the garage affects comfort, heat transfer or adjoining living areas — whether for a new build, renovation or existing home. Ask any supplier for their engineering report.

These estimates apply to ThermaDoor only and cannot be assumed for other products used as garage door insulation.

Step 1: Where are you located?

Your climate affects how much thermal load your garage door creates and how much insulation can help.

Larger doors have more surface area, so insulation has a greater impact on thermal load.

Step 3: Tell us about your home

These factors determine how much the garage door's thermal performance affects your living spaces and energy use.

Is the garage attached to your house?
Do you use the garage as a workshop, gym, or living space?
