Home / Garage Door Insulation Hervey Bay

Purpose-Built. Independently Tested. Since 2012.

Hervey Bay’s salty coastal air and steamy subtropical afternoons can quickly turn your garage into a hot, sticky sauna. And when those unexpected cold snaps hit, the chill can creep through overnight. These temperature swings affect more than just the garage. They impact the comfort of nearby rooms, drive up your energy bills, and cut off a valuable part of your home year-round.

ThermaDoor garage door insulation is purpose-built for the Hervey Bay climate. Our premium EPS panels are engineered specifically for sectional and tilt doors to block up to 90% of radiant heat, reduce street noise, and instantly upgrade your garage with a durable, wipe-clean vinyl finish.

Proudly Australian owned and manufactured, we offer two simple ways to get ThermaDoor in Hervey Bay and the wider Fraser Coast: order a DIY kit delivered directly to your door, or book a professional installation with our certified local technicians.

Learn how to keep your Hervey Bay garage cool this summer without air-con.

Built for Hervey Bay's Climate

Coastal Heat & Summer Sun

Hervey Bay's summers are long and hot, with garage temperatures easily exceeding 40°C in an uninsulated space. ThermaDoor's EPS core and reflective foil backing work together to block radiant heat and keep the comfort in, whether your garage faces the bay or the western sun.

Storm Season Protection

The Wide Bay region's wet season brings heavy tropical downpours, strong winds, and wind-driven moisture. ThermaDoor's laminated vinyl finish is water resistant and impact resistant — unlike open-cell foam, polyester batts, or fibreglass insulation that absorb moisture and fail in wet conditions. Built for Queensland weather.

Cool Winter Mornings

Even in Hervey Bay's mild winters, early mornings can be surprisingly cool. ThermaDoor slows heat loss overnight, so stepping into your garage in the morning isn't a shock to the system — and your stored gear stays protected year-round.

Home Energy Rating Support

ThermaDoor gives builders, homeowners and energy assessors verified garage-door assembly R-values, backed by an independent engineering report, to review when the garage affects comfort, heat transfer or adjoining living areas — whether for a new build, renovation or existing home. Ask any supplier for their engineering report.

What Hervey Bay Customers are Saying About ThermaDoor

“I’ve had it installed three times over 12 years. For us it was a no-brainer”

A Real Home. A Real Result.

Mountain Creek is just up the road on the Sunshine Coast — the same Queensland climate, the same afternoon sun, the same uninsulated steel door problem that Brisbane homeowners know well.

For Deborah’s son, an NDIS participant, the garage is “The Cave” — a vital space for his independence and his support team. They had already invested in an epoxy floor and replastering to create something special. But the heat made it almost unusable.

The FLIR images below were taken on a completely ordinary autumn afternoon — outside temperature just 28°C, sunny, 15 km/h NE wind. The uninsulated steel door was already radiating 44.7°C into the space. That is not a heatwave. That is a standard garage door making a mild day unbearable. Hervey Bay summers regularly exceed 35°C — in Urangan, Torquay, and Eli Waters, with the afternoon sun hitting a west-facing door, the same door here would be significantly worse.

“The temperature in the space has dropped by at least 20 degrees, which has completely transformed how we can use it. Since installing ThermaDoor, it has become a comfortable, functional, and genuinely enjoyable environment. It has opened up a whole new level of independence and capacity building for my son and his team. This has been one of the most impactful upgrades we’ve made to our home.”

R-Values, Thermal Bridging and Home Energy Rating Evidence

Why Garage Door Assembly R-Values Matter

On a garage door, heat does not only pass through the insulation panel. It can also travel through the steel frame, hinges, joins and edges. This is called thermal bridging, and it is why the R-value of the insulation material alone does not show how the complete garage door performs.

Under Australian Standards, insulation R-values used for building-performance and energy-assessment purposes must be calculated as system or assembly values, not just material-only values. For garage doors, that means the complete installed door matters — including the insulation, steel sections, hinges, joins and hardware.

ThermaDoor provides independently calculated, dual-season garage-door assembly R-values:

R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer)

ThermaDoor provides honest R-values — independently verified, calculated on the complete installed door, and published for homeowners, builders and energy assessors to review.

Standard uninsulated steel garage doors perform at approximately R0.0, providing virtually no thermal resistance. That is why there is a major difference between a product with a material-only R-value and a garage door insulation system with a verified assembly R-value.

When Home Energy Rating, NatHERS, renovation or energy-efficiency discussions include the garage, verified assembly R-values give builders and assessors clearer evidence to work with. ThermaDoor does not guarantee a rating outcome, but it does provide documented performance information for a part of the home that is often overlooked.

Thermal Bridging Through Steel Garage Door Hardware — FLIR Thermal Image

Surface temperature readings: 37.6°C at the steel hinge (thermal bridge) / 32.6°C at the ThermaDoor panel

What you are seeing: The blue areas show ThermaDoor panels doing their job — blocking radiant heat. The red and orange areas are the steel hinges and panel joins conducting heat straight through the door. This is thermal bridging, and it happens in every sectional garage door. It is why material R-values alone do not tell the full story — and why ThermaDoor’s R-values are calculated on the complete installed door assembly, steel and all.

Our article on thermal bridging and garage doors explains why tested assembly values matter.

ThermaDoor Garage Door Insulation ROI Calculator

Use the calculator below to estimate the possible payback and long-term value of insulating a suitable Hervey Bay garage door with ThermaDoor.

These estimates apply to ThermaDoor only and cannot be assumed for other products used as garage door insulation.

Step 1: Where are you located?

Your climate affects how much thermal load your garage door creates and how much insulation can help.

Step 2: What size is your garage door?

Larger doors have more surface area, so insulation has a greater impact on thermal load.

Step 3: Tell us about your home

These factors determine how much the garage door's thermal performance affects your living spaces and energy use.

Is the garage attached to your house?
Do you use the garage as a workshop, gym, or living space?
Do you run air conditioning or heating in rooms adjoining the garage?

Important — ThermaDoor specific: All estimates in this calculator are based exclusively on the verified assembly R-values of ThermaDoor (R1.43 winter / R1.39 summer), independently determined under AS/NZS 4859.1 & 4859.2:2018. ThermaDoor is Australia's original purpose-made garage door insulation and the only product with independently engineered, garage door-specific assembly R-values. These results cannot be assumed for any other product. Actual energy savings will vary depending on home construction, garage orientation, air leakage, heating and cooling habits, and your electricity tariff. This calculator does not constitute a guarantee of energy savings. Plan around the conservative estimate.

Garage Door Insulation and Home Energy Rating

Where ThermaDoor Fits in Energy-Performance Discussions

A Home Energy Rating looks at the home as a whole, not one product in isolation. But where a garage is attached to the home, sits below or beside living areas, or affects heat transfer into adjoining rooms, the garage door can become part of the energy-performance conversation — whether for a new build, major renovation or an existing home being assessed for upgrades.

ThermaDoor gives builders, homeowners and energy assessors verified garage-door assembly R-values, backed by an independent engineering report, to review when assessing a suitable sectional or tilt garage door. This applies equally to existing homes where a Home Energy Rating is being used to identify upgrade opportunities and reduce running costs.

ThermaDoor does not guarantee a NatHERS or Home Energy Rating result. Rating outcomes depend on the whole home, including design, orientation, glazing, insulation, ventilation, air leakage, garage connection and assessment method.

Before and after surface temperature readings of a garage door with and without ThermaDoor insulation
Before: 61°C surface temp. After ThermaDoor: 31°C. Disclaimer: Temperatures may vary depending on orientation and location of garage.

Three Layers. Engineered as One

High-Density EPS Core

Flame retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door — keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter, year after year.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

Durable, flame retardant, UV-resistant vinyl facing protects the panel from Australia's harsh climate. It resists fading, cracking, and weathering — delivering a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Bonded to the back of every panel, this construction-grade foil reflects radiant heat, acts as a Class 2 vapour barrier, and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification. It's the same foil used to wrap Australian homes — completing the three-layer system.

Independent NatHERS Modelling  |  Hervey Bay Climate Zone 10  |  ThermaDoor Installed

Struggling to Hit 7 Stars? Your Garage Door Might Be the Answer

How Garage Door Insulation Helps Hervey Bay New Builds Meet NCC Requirements

If you are building a new home in Queensland, you already know about the 7-star NatHERS energy efficiency requirements under NCC . Hitting that target can be difficult and expensive -- upgraded glazing, extra roof insulation, costly design changes.

Many homeowners and their builders overlook the largest moving part of the house: the garage door.

Independent energy modelling on a standard slab-on-ground home in Hervey Bay (Climate Zone 10) showed that insulating an unconditioned garage with ThermaDoor garage door insulation improved the home's NatHERS rating from 6.8 stars to a compliant 7.2 stars. That is a +0.4 star improvement from a single, low-cost upgrade. If your garage is air-conditioned, the improvement jumps to +1.4 stars.

To count in your NatHERS assessment, your energy assessor needs a verified assembly R-value -- not a material R-value or an unverified claim. ThermaDoor provides an independently verified R1.43 winter assembly R-value, calculated to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 by a registered professional engineer. That is the exact number your assessor inputs into their NatHERS software.

Your next steps are simple:

1. Tell your builder you want ThermaDoor specified in your new build.

2. Send your energy assessor the link below -- it has the verified R-value report and full NatHERS compliance data they need.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Still Shopping Around for Garage Door Insulation? Start Here.

Before you buy, do one simple thing: check whether the supplier quotes the same R-value on every page of their own website.

Australian Standards are clear. Material R-values tell you how a foam board performs on a bench. They tell you nothing about how it performs inside a moving, unsealed metal garage door. Read why rigid boards are not purpose-built for garage doors.

The only R-value that counts is the installed assembly value. Some suppliers in this market quote R1.75 material and R2.0 installed on one page, then R1.5 material and “up to R1.75 installed” on another. These are not rounding differences. They are completely different claims about the same product, on the same website, with no independent testing to support either version.

Every consumer has the right to make an informed decision based on accurate product information. If a supplier cannot produce an independent engineering report for the complete installed door assembly tested to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018, their installed R-value is not a measurement. It is a guess.

This checklist gives you the five questions to ask before you spend a dollar.

  • Door-specific R-value checks (AS/NZS 4859.1 and 4859.2)
  • Mechanical fixing vs glue — why it matters
  • Door weight and spring safety (AS/NZS 4505)
  • Air gap and cavity design prompts
  • NCC 2022 / NatHERS documentation prompts

Frequently Asked Questions - Garage Door Insulation Hervey Bay

How is ThermaDoor garage door insulation priced in Hervey Bay?

There are three ways to get ThermaDoor in Hervey Bay, each with different pricing. DIY panel pricing is shown in the table above — order directly from our online shop and install it yourself. If you’d prefer professional installation direct through ThermaDoor, pricing depends on a number of variables including door size, configuration, and travel — contact us directly and we’ll provide a quote specific to your job. Professional installation includes a spring balance adjustment to account for the added weight of the panels. Alternatively, our three local authorised distributors — Show It Off Home Improvements, SD Garage Doors, and Good Look Garage Doors — each set their own labour rates independently, so contact them directly for a supply and install quote. All options use the same genuine ThermaDoor product.

Yes — and the results in coastal Queensland climates are significant. ThermaDoor’s tri-layer system (35mm EPS core, sisalation foil backing, and laminated vinyl facing) blocks radiant heat, reduces conductive heat transfer, and reflects solar energy away from the door surface. Our customers regularly report temperature reductions of 8°C to 15°C inside an insulated garage compared to an uninsulated one. ThermaDoor is independently tested to R1.43 (winter) and R1.39 (summer) — values calculated specifically for the garage door, not repurposed from wall or ceiling testing.

ThermaDoor is specifically designed for Australian coastal conditions. The laminated vinyl facing is water resistant and impact resistant, so it handles wind-driven rain and coastal moisture without absorbing water or degrading over time. Unlike open-cell foam, polyester batts, or fibreglass insulation, ThermaDoor will not sag, rot, or lose performance when exposed to humidity or the occasional storm. The EPS core is also mould and mildew resistant — an important consideration in Hervey Bay’s warm, humid climate.

Both options are available. The DIY kit is designed for a standard homeowner with basic tools — no special skills required. Most single garage doors take 2 to 3 hours to complete, and double doors typically take 3 to 5 hours. Full step-by-step video guides are available on our website. If you prefer professional installation, Hervey Bay has three authorised ThermaDoor distributors — Show It Off Home Improvements, SD Garage Doors, and Good Look Garage Doors — who can supply and install for you. ThermaDoor also installs directly for customers who contact us.

Yes. ThermaDoor’s R-values are calculated to AS/NZS 4859.1 & 2:2018 and are backed by engineering reports specific to the garage door assembly — not generic wall or ceiling values. This makes ThermaDoor suitable for inclusion in NatHERS energy assessments and NCC 2022 compliance documentation. If you are building or renovating and need documentation for your energy assessor, contact us directly and we can provide the relevant technical data sheets and engineering reports.

ThermaDoor carries a lifetime warranty on the EPS insulation core — it is guaranteed for as long as your garage door remains in service. The laminated vinyl finish and fixings are covered by a separate 7-year workmanship and materials warranty. Both warranties are designed with Australian conditions in mind, including coastal humidity, UV exposure, and temperature extremes. There are no hidden caveats related to climate zone — the warranty applies equally to Hervey Bay homes as it does across the rest of Australia.
