Garage Door Insulation in New England & Snowy Mountains

Garage door insulation is one of the most effective upgrades a New England and Snowy Mountains homeowner can make. The New England tablelands and Snowy Mountains experience some of Australia’s most extreme temperature ranges. From the scorching summer heat in towns like Armidale and Tamworth to the sub-zero winter mornings around Cooma and Jindabyne, your garage is on the frontline. An uninsulated garage door acts as a giant thermal conductor, turning the space into a sauna during summer and a cold box in winter.

These temperature extremes affect more than just the garage. They impact the comfort of adjoining living areas, drive up your cooling and heating costs, and restrict how you use a significant portion of your home.

ThermaDoor is Australia’s only purpose-built composite garage door insulation — designed by an Australian builder who understood exactly how heat moves through a home, and engineered specifically for the way sectional and tilt doors move and flex. Composite means multiple components working together as one system: a high-density EPS core that resists conducted heat, a laminated Sisalation foil backing that blocks radiant heat before it reaches the foam, and an engineered air cavity that makes the foil work — all independently tested as a complete assembly by a qualified thermal engineer. The result: up to 90% of radiant heat blocked, meaningful performance in both summer and winter, and a clean, durable vinyl finish built to last.

Proudly Australian owned and manufactured, we offer two simple ways to get ThermaDoor in New England & the Snowy Mountains: order a DIY kit delivered directly to your door, or book a professional installation with our certified local technicians.

Australian Made. Australian Owned.

Australian Made certified badge - ThermaDoor Premium, Licence 7177
ThermaDoor is designed and manufactured in Australia by a team that has spent over a decade engineering insulation specifically for Australian conditions — built from the ground up for the way garage doors actually move, flex, and transfer heat.

Every panel is made here in Australia, by Australians, to a consistent specification. ThermaDoor holds registered design protection — recognition that this is an original, purpose-engineered product. When you order ThermaDoor for your Sydney garage, you are buying a product that was conceived, engineered, and manufactured on home soil — backed by independently verified performance data that we stand behind completely.

Built for the New England & Snowy Mountains Climate

Extreme Summer Heat

From the scorching summer days in Tamworth and Armidale to the hot inland afternoons across the New England tablelands, ThermaDoor dramatically reduces radiant heat transfer, keeping your garage significantly cooler during long, dry summers.

Frost and Alpine Conditions

The Snowy Mountains and higher elevations around Cooma and Jindabyne experience hard frosts, ice, and alpine conditions in winter. ThermaDoor's laminated vinyl finish is water-resistant and won't absorb moisture, unlike open-cell foam or polyester batts that can sag, degrade, and hold dampness over time.

Severe Cold Winters

New England and Snowy Mountains winters are among the harshest in NSW. ThermaDoor slows heat loss overnight, so stepping into your garage on a winter morning is no longer a shock — and your stored gear stays protected year-round.

Home Energy Rating Support

ThermaDoor gives builders, homeowners and energy assessors verified garage-door assembly R-values, backed by an independent engineering report, to review when the garage affects comfort, heat transfer or adjoining living areas — whether for a new build, renovation or existing home. Ask any supplier for their engineering report.

What New South Wales Customers are Saying About ThermaDoor

Double garage door fully fitted with ThermaDoor insulation panels.
“Garage temps have dropped 4°C to 6°C since installation and so glad we installed the ThermaDoor panels.”

We built a new house in 2023/2024 and the garage door gets full western sun every afternoon. I made sure to take note of our garage temps before installation and noticed immediately after installation the temp dropped 4°C to 6°C in summer and in winter it’s not as cold. The garage just feels more comfortable on very hot days and you really notice the difference when you open the garage door. Well worth the investment — I’ve recommended it quite a few times since.

A Real Result. Measured by a Builder

When Melbourne builder John Guida from Stronghold Construction installed ThermaDoor on his own garage, he did not just take our word for it. He tested the results using a professional FLIR MR277 thermal imaging camera — the same equipment building inspectors use to identify heat loss, moisture risk and insulation failure.

The data he captured is some of the most compelling real-world proof we have seen.

SURFACE TEMP REDUCTION

The Summer Heat Problem — Measured

John’s uninsulated metal garage door panels were radiating heat at a blistering 47.6°C. That is not a heatwave reading. That is what an ordinary metal garage door does when the sun has been on it. On a 40°C Australian summer day, the same door would be significantly worse.

John photographed the door mid-installation with one ThermaDoor panel already in place. He then pointed his FLIR camera at the door — and the difference was immediate and undeniable, with the insulated panels measuring 17.4°C.

That is a 30.0°C reduction in surface temperature.

Full installation complete — consistent 17.4°C surface temperature across the entire door. A 30°C reduction from bare metal.

Winter Condensation — Eliminated

The New England Tablelands and the Snowy Mountains experience some of the harshest winter conditions in Australia — sub-zero nights, heavy frost, and freezing temperatures that turn an uninsulated garage into an icebox. It is exactly the kind of extreme climate where condensation becomes a serious problem.

When an uninsulated metal door drops below the dew point of the air inside the garage, moisture condenses on the surface — a dripping door, a damp garage, and potential damage to everything stored inside.

ThermaDoor creates a thermal barrier that keeps the interior surface of the door close to the ambient room temperature, preventing it from dropping below the dew point. The FLIR thermal data confirms it: the dew point reading dropped significantly with ThermaDoor installed, removing the conditions that cause condensation to form. The sisalation foil backing bonded to every panel plays a key role in this — reflecting radiant heat and acting as a Class 2 vapour barrier, it is the same construction-grade foil used to wrap Australian homes.

“Well done regarding product and method — the spacer between works a treat. I have no condensation on the panel door anymore after those freezing Melbourne nights. Thank you once again, it very much solved my issue and made it look better. Will use it again”.

R-Values, Thermal Bridging and Home Energy Rating Evidence

Why Garage Door Assembly R-Values Matter

On a garage door, heat does not only pass through the insulation panel. It can also travel through the steel frame, hinges, joins and edges. This is called thermal bridging, and it is why the R-value of the insulation material alone does not show how the complete garage door performs.

Under Australian Standards, insulation R-values used for building-performance and energy-assessment purposes must be calculated as system or assembly values, not just material-only values. For garage doors, that means the complete installed door matters — including the insulation, steel sections, hinges, joins and hardware.

ThermaDoor provides independently calculated, dual-season garage-door assembly R-values:

R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer)

ThermaDoor provides honest R-values — independently verified, calculated on the complete installed door, and published for homeowners, builders and energy assessors to review.

Standard uninsulated steel garage doors perform at approximately R0.0, providing virtually no thermal resistance. That is why there is a major difference between a product with a material-only R-value and a garage door insulation system with a verified assembly R-value. ThermaDoor’s composite technology — EPS core, reflective foil, and maintained air cavity — means each component contributes to that assembly R-value.

When Home Energy Rating, NatHERS, renovation or energy-efficiency discussions include the garage, verified assembly R-values give builders and assessors clearer evidence to work with. ThermaDoor does not guarantee a rating outcome, but it does provide documented performance information for a part of the home that is often overlooked.

Thermal Bridging Through Steel Garage Door Hardware — FLIR Thermal Image

Surface temperature readings: 37.6°C at the steel hinge (thermal bridge) / 32.6°C at the ThermaDoor panel

What you are seeing: The blue areas show ThermaDoor panels doing their job — blocking radiant heat. The red and orange areas are the steel hinges and panel joins conducting heat straight through the door. This is thermal bridging, and it happens in every sectional garage door. It is why material R-values alone do not tell the full story — and why ThermaDoor’s R-values are calculated on the complete installed door assembly, steel and all.

Our article on thermal bridging and garage doors explains why tested assembly values matter.

Important — ThermaDoor specific: All estimates in this calculator are based exclusively on the verified assembly R-values of ThermaDoor (R1.43 winter / R1.39 summer), independently determined under AS/NZS 4859.1 & 4859.2:2018. ThermaDoor is Australia's original purpose-made garage door insulation and the only product with independently engineered, garage door-specific assembly R-values. These results cannot be assumed for any other product. Actual energy savings will vary depending on home construction, garage orientation, air leakage, heating and cooling habits, and your electricity tariff. This calculator does not constitute a guarantee of energy savings. Plan around the conservative estimate.

Garage Door Insulation and Home Energy Rating

Where ThermaDoor Fits in Energy-Performance Discussions

A Home Energy Rating looks at the home as a whole, not one product in isolation. But where a garage is attached to the home, sits below or beside living areas, or affects heat transfer into adjoining rooms, the garage door can become part of the energy-performance conversation — whether for a new build, major renovation or an existing home being assessed for upgrades.

As the only purpose-built, composite technology garage door insulation in Australia — and the only product with a verified complete installed garage door assembly R-value — ThermaDoor gives homeowners, builders, architects, designers and energy assessors independently verified data, backed by an engineering report, to use when assessing a suitable sectional or tilt garage door. A verified improvement to the building envelope supports a more accurate Home Energy Rating — whether that matters to you now for comfort and running costs, or later when you sell or rent the property. An improved Home Energy Rating is a documentable, verifiable asset that can be communicated in any property transaction.

ThermaDoor does not guarantee a NatHERS or Home Energy Rating result. Rating outcomes depend on the whole home, including design, orientation, glazing, insulation, ventilation, air leakage, garage connection and assessment method.

The Original. Still the Only.

ThermaDoor has been on the Australian market since 2012 — and in that time, no other brand has matched what we offer:

Before and after surface temperature readings of a garage door with and without ThermaDoor insulation
Before: 61°C surface temp. After ThermaDoor: 31°C. Disclaimer: Temperatures may vary depending on orientation and location of garage.

Three Layers. Engineered as One

High-Density EPS Core

Flame retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door — keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter, year after year. As the primary insulator in the composite system, it works in tandem with the foil and air cavity to deliver the verified assembly R-value.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Laminated to the back of every panel, this construction-grade foil reflects radiant heat back across the internal air cavity — the gap maintained by ThermaDoor's purpose-made foam packers. The foil only works because the gap is engineered. Together they form the reflective half of ThermaDoor's composite technology. The foil also acts as a Class 2 vapour barrier and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification — it's the same foil used to wrap Australian homes.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

The composite system only performs if the materials stay intact. This durable, flame retardant, UV-resistant vinyl facing protects the EPS core and lamination bond from Australia's harsh climate — resisting fading, cracking, and weathering year after year. The result is a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

Frequently Asked Questions Garage Door Insulation New England & Snowy Mountains

Does garage door insulation really work in the New England & Snowy Mountains climate?

Yes — and in this region it works harder than almost anywhere else in NSW. New England & Snowy Mountains homes experience both extreme summer heat and sub-zero winter temperatures. ThermaDoor’s EPS panels block up to 90% of radiant heat in summer and significantly slow heat loss in winter, making your garage usable year-round rather than a space you avoid for six months of the year.

Yes. ThermaDoor panels use a laminated vinyl facing that is water-resistant and will not absorb moisture, sag, or degrade in cold, damp alpine conditions. Unlike open-cell foam or polyester batts, ThermaDoor is purpose-built for Australian conditions and will not be affected by frost, condensation, or the freeze-thaw cycles common in higher elevation areas like Jindabyne and Cooma.

Yes. ThermaDoor DIY kits are designed for homeowners with no trade experience. Each kit is purpose-built for your specific door size — sectional or tilt — and ships directly to your door anywhere in the New England & Snowy Mountains region. Most installations are completed in a few hours using basic hand tools. Full instructions and video guides are included.

Yes. ThermaDoor has authorised distributors in Armidale, Tamworth, and Cooma who can supply and professionally install ThermaDoor insulation. Contact details are listed on this page. If you are in a more remote area, a DIY kit delivered to your door is the most practical option.

Yes. NSW’s NCC 7-star energy requirements apply to all new homes and major renovations. An uninsulated garage door performs at approximately R0.0 — one of the biggest thermal liabilities in any home. ThermaDoor is the only garage door insulation in Australia with independently calculated assembly R-values to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018. When your builder or energy assessor asks about garage door insulation, ask for ThermaDoor by name.

ThermaDoor panels are engineered for long-term durability in all Australian climates, including cold alpine environments. The EPS core does not absorb moisture and the laminated vinyl facing resists UV, frost, and temperature cycling. ThermaDoor carries a manufacturer’s warranty and has been independently tested to Australian standards. There is no maintenance required after installation.
